Double Whammy On Gen X

March 12th, 2009 · No Comments · career, change

The boss brought my attention to this article about Generation X whether this current apocalypse from MSNBC. Being a proud member of Gen X and having read Douglas Coupland’s novel that officially branded us this article caught my attention.

Like the subject of this piece, I too have been caught in the double whammy. I was laid off in 2001 while working for an outsourcing company that was over-dependent on dot.com companies that were busting. And I was laid off last December, a victim of the current economic crises.

There is hope for my generation. The author, Eve Tahmincioglu quotes Neil Howe:
“This generation never had any illusions that an employer would take care of them for life, says Neil Howe, economist, demographer and co-author of “Generations: The History of America’s Future, 1584 to 2069.”

“’Generation X never expected any security,‘” he says, adding that the mentality of the company man or woman was dead by the time these individuals entered the workforce.”

So true. I never thought I was my grandfather. I was never going to retire from Timex with a huge pension. Any other generations out there feeling like they are being hit harder?
